CAREER CHANGE
AS AN ADULT

Many people ask themselves this question as they consider a possible career change. In fact, according to a study conducted by Reuters in 2013 in the United States, more than fifty percent of professionals find themselves working in a profession that does not correspond to their natural abilities.

Nevertheless, “fitting” in one’s job post does not always mean that one needs to turn their life completely upside down: it doesn’t always mandate that one move to a different country, change their professional field entirely, or leave behind the life they have been building up to this point. Sometimes, this kind of change merely requires that one makes a series of readjustments in their personal and professional life. This all depends on one’s “level of integration.”

“Level of Integration” is a term that True Horizon has coined after having encountered hundreds of clients in this particular situation. One’s “level of integration” tells us how much a client is adjusted to their current job, and what changes or what type of career plan needs to be designed and implemented. There are 3 levels:

1. High level of Integration:

This is when your natural talents, skills or abilities are needed and valued in your current profession, and when your motivations and interests in life are well aligned with your company´s vision and mission. This should be the most common level of integration in society, though, unfortunately it is not.

2. Medium Level of Integration

This is when some of your main talents, skills or abilities are daily utilized while others are not needed by your current company. We also say you have a medium level of integration when not all of your interests and motivations in life coincide with your company´s vision and mission. This is the most common level of integration in society, and it requires that one integrate, or eliminate, certain elements into, or from, their professional environments.

3. Low Level of Integration

This is when your talents are seldom put to use in your current profession, and your interests and motivations in life do not coincide with the company´s mission and vision. When this takes place it is common to feel a high level of frustration and anxiety. In these cases, we recommend a more drastic change, but do not fear! There are many ways to go about it so the process of change becomes less traumatic.

In our line of work, we do not always advise adults to change their profession entirely. It is more about focusing on developing a clear and coherent professional goal, so that one can examine how best to adjust their professional and personal life to arrive at it.  Please visit our services section to better understand how we.
